Semarang, 5 Agustus 2025 — Bahasa Inggris telah menjadi bahasa pengantar global dalam berbagai bidang mulai dari bisnis, akademik, teknologi, hingga diplomasi. Namun, mengapa justru bahasa ini yang mendominasi dunia internasional?
Sejarah mencatat bahwa dominasi bahasa Inggris berakar dari perluasan kekuasaan Inggris Raya pada era kolonial. Negara tersebut diketahui pernah menjajah lebih dari 60 negara di berbagai belahan dunia. Dalam proses kolonialisasi itu, bahasa Inggris disebarluaskan sebagai bahasa administrasi dan pendidikan, yang masih bertahan hingga kini di banyak bekas jajahannya.
Setelah berakhirnya era kolonialisme, dominasi bahasa Inggris tidak lantas meredup. Justru semakin menguat ketika Amerika Serikat muncul sebagai kekuatan ekonomi dan budaya dunia pasca Perang Dunia II. Melalui industri hiburan seperti film Hollywood, musik, serta pengaruh teknologi digital dan internet, bahasa Inggris semakin melekat dalam kehidupan global.
“Bahasa Inggris tidak serta-merta menjadi internasional karena struktur atau tata bahasanya yang unggul, tetapi karena pengaruh kekuasaan politik dan ekonomi dari negara-negara berbahasa Inggris,” jelas salah satu dosen Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Nasional Karangturi.
Hingga hari ini, bahasa Inggris digunakan sebagai bahasa utama dalam jurnal ilmiah internasional, komunikasi penerbangan, organisasi internasional seperti PBB, serta bisnis dan perdagangan global. Bahasa ini juga menjadi kunci mobilitas akademik dan profesional lintas negara.
Kesadaran akan pentingnya penguasaan bahasa Inggris membuat banyak institusi pendidikan, termasuk Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di berbagai perguruan tinggi di Indonesia, terus berinovasi dalam pembelajaran yang adaptif dengan kebutuhan global.
“Belajar bahasa Inggris hari ini bukan hanya soal bisa berbicara, tetapi juga soal akses terhadap ilmu, teknologi, dan kesempatan global,” tambahnya.
Dengan begitu, sejarah panjang dan kekuatan geopolitik telah menempatkan bahasa Inggris sebagai alat komunikasi global yang terus relevan hingga saat ini.
